How one woman and a small group of volunteers found homes for more than 900 horses… Elaine Nash and the Hallelujah Horses. Elaine Nash didn’t know that the call she received in October 2016 would take her away from home for nearly a year, requiring all her professional skills and a healthy dose of fortitude. But even if she had known, she still would have taken it.
I’m fascinated with the concept of leadership. Some people believe that great leaders are born with the inherent skills and personality traits that predispose them to becoming effective leaders. Others say that leadership is a skill (or set of skills) that can be learned, and thus taught. Perhaps there’s some merit to both theories. But my horses have shown me there’s something much more important than either, and it’s simply this:
In order to become an effective leader, the individual must have a compelling REASON to lead.
“I dream’ed a dream to-night,” said Shakespeare’s Romeo: a dream of love reviving life. When Kim Meagher came across Romeo, a terrified three-week-old sorrel bay with his dam at a kill auction, both with gaping wounds, she too dream’ed a dream – that the safe haven she had previously provided for 200 horses would give them both a chance for a future.
Erin Fowle is a Parelli Foundation scholarship recipient and a 3* Parelli Professional. All scholarship recipients are required to give a few hours of their time to help in one or more of our program areas; Youth Horsemanship, Therapeutic Horsemanship, Horse Welfare, and Scholarships for the Talented and the Career Minded. This requirement is called “Pay-It-Forward”. Here are some thoughts from Erin about her horsemanship journey with the Foundation and her Pay-It-Forward experience.
The Parelli Foundation has made a grant to Windhaven Therapeutic Riding (WHTR), a non-profit organization that offers a variety of courses for veterans, active-duty, and reserve members of the military in La Center, Washington. Created by veterans for veterans, the program runs for a minimum of two years and provides an effective treatment alternative to those for whom standard treatment has not been effective or when treatment side effects are not tolerated well.
Pricilla loved people, and I know she brought a lot of joy to many. She had 35 puppies for Guide Dogs for the Blind.
We Put Your Generosity to Work. At the Parelli Foundation, we strive to put every dollar you donate to work advancing natural horsemanship education in Youth Horsemanship, Therapeutic Horsemanship, Horse Welfare, and Scholarships for the Talented and the Career Minded.
